GRITSWith their latest CD, GRITS tries to finally get some attention from the general Christian music fans, by employing the talents of Mac Powell, Dan Haseltine and other all-stars. Frankly, this duo is too good for Christians. They should just forget trying to appeal to the "Christian" market, and go as secular as possible, bringing the light of the Lord to regular hip-hop fans, not just holy hip-hop fans. But that's a debate for another day...

Stacy “Coffee” Jones and Teron “Bonafide” Carter, aka “GRITS,” is Christian music's most famous and best-selling rap duo. With a lyrical delivery similar to secular duo OutKast, GRITS has been working hard for more than a decade bringing fans Southern-style spiritual hip-hop with pop influences. Some of their biggest hits include “They All Fall Down,” “Hittin' Curves,” and “Ooh Aah.”

On their latest, Reiterate, two major changes have occurred. First, GRITS is no longer signed to Gotee Records-- they've started their own label called Revolution Art, with the intention to sign and develop new artists in the years to come. Reiterate is their label's first release. The other change involves GRITS' sound-- a combination of 1980s synth pop and modern electronica. Much of Reiterate's material is like a sonic waterfall pouring into your ears.

If you've ever wondered what Mac Powell, the lead singer from rock band Third Day, would sound like doing hip-hop, you'll want to hear him guesting on “Fly Away,” and Dan Haseltine from Jars of Clay shows up crooning on “Sky May Fall.” One of the female voices on “I Run” is supposedly Martha Munizzi, but the voice has been so digitally manipulated that it's almost impossible to tell it's her.

GRITS is trying really hard to broaden its audience with Reiterate, and because they've made a diverse, high-quality, even artistic album, chances are the people who like rock or praise & worship with only a casual interest in hip-hop will seek out this CD for their collection.
