Debbie Tucker represents every woman who has overcome struggles, keeping her eyes on the Lord despite all the negativity and hurt surrounding her. The Pittsburgh-based black Gospel recording artist's "Oh Praise" CD is a stirring collection of songs highlighting Tucker's seasoned, tour-de-force voice.
It was in Toronto, at a Worship Conference, where I met Tucker and came to know about her. She sang in a talent showcase. Now she had her daughter with her, and my guess is Ms. Tucker is in her 40s or 50s, so she's been around a while and seen some things. Though I don't know what she's been through, you can see on her face that she's had a tough life, but you can also tell she has a resilient spirit, one that "gets back up again." So I bought her "Oh Praise" CD, and listening to it now, I hear the emotion in every word she sings on songs like "Magnify." This woman "sings it like she means it," which the main criteria for whether or not I want to tell the world about a singer. Imagine if you combined the vocals of Patti LaBelle, Dionne Warwick, and CeCe Winans-- that's what Tucker sounds like on songs like "Jesus Is The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me," (this is different than the similar Martha Munizzi song), and the smooth jazz feel of "Sunshine." Like so many black Gospel artists, Ms. Tucker is hard to reach. Why is it that so many black singers make CDs and then it's nearly impossible to find them on the web, to email them, or even call them? The only known connection I have for you to experience this woman and her talent at this time is myspace.com/debbietuckermusic. |
