Miller, Kris Print E-mail

Kris MillerIf you like music that's a cross between ethereal folk and inspirational country, delivered by a guitar-playing Christian woman who grew up Jewish, then you should check out the unique sound of Kris Miller, whose video for "Inner Cell Phone To Jesus" just appeared on Gospel Music Channel's "The Kitchen Sink" show. At the end of the article, find out how you can WIN A FREE COPY of Kris' new CD!

Kris MillerWhile a teenager, Miller met a group of men and women who were called to live the life of Christ on the road in faith. They traveled like the disciples 2000 years ago, with a bedroll, tote sack, and in their bare feet, dressed in white robes. Miller began a pilgrimage to know God, which took her all over the world. Through this experience came her songs of joy and a daily walk with God, which she is happy to share, fulfilling her dream to help heal the world with song.

Now settled in Hemet, California, the singer-songwriter is currently promoting her CD, "Alive & Well." Miller, whose music has been nominated for a prestigious Grammy Award, has won numerous songwriting awards, including an Emerald Award for "Far Beyond," because the messages in her lyrics deeply touch the hearts of many people. Her songs, like "Blessed Be," "Beyond," and "Buckets," are being played on radio stations all over the world, having been recognized by publications like Billboard, Southern Gospel, Roots Gospel, Circuit Rider, and Christian Country.

When she's not singing solo, Miller also leads the acappella choir Pure Righteousness. They perform at prisons, in churches, nursing homes and on radio and TV.

Miller took some time to answer questions from ChristianMusicDaily.com's Mark Weber about her life and her new CD, “Alive & Well.”

Question: Why did you decide to make the CD “Alive and Well?”

Answer: Ever since I was a child I have been writing music; I even wrote my 8th grade graduation song. The title track, "Alive and Well,” is not only based on the fact the God is here on earth Alive and Well, but so am I. I have had a medical challenge called Acromegaly which is a benign tumor on my pituitary gland. Normally it causes lots of problems and an early exit from earth. After seeing five specialists all they wanted to do was put me on drugs and do a very hard surgery on my brain. This did not sound very good to me, so I prayed and asked the Lord to lead me out of that, and, sure enough, through lots of prayers, fasting, and a special diet, the Lord heard my prayer and has not only kept me from the surgery, but the tumor has not grown and is now dissolving. So I am Alive and Well, and I want to remind everyone they are too, and not to let life pass us by before we miss our opportunity to do something great for the Lord. And what I mean by great could be something as simple as offering another person a smile or kind word.

Question: Do you ever miss "being Jewish?"

Answer: No, I do not miss it as I am still "Jewish" in the sense that I am a completed Jew, and can really appreciate that as the foundation for Christianity. It is some witness having Passover with my dad and mom, and them being able to see what Christ has done in my life. It goes way beyond me preaching at them as I did for years. Since my mom got cancer and got on chemo, I have been calling her every day, and so she gets to experience my life of miracles with me daily. And there are just too many miracles for her to deny Almighty God. My dad--who is 88--has actually accepted the fact that I am Christian, and is respectful to me about it. Twenty years ago it was a different story. But now as God pours out wisdom on this planet, and because of the times we live in, they are getting a totally different view than they did when I left the university to become Christ's disciple and walk around in a robe. Just imagine yourself leaving everything and walking down the road in complete faith, not knowing what you will eat or where you will sleep-- in that experience one gets to see God is Alive and He does provide. I lived that way for 25 years and never once went hungry or was without.

Question: Did you get a lot of criticism from certain people when you converted to Christianity?

Answer: The hardest was my family; they just could not understand how I could leave the world to live like Jesus. And yes, living on the road in faith in a white robe, you will get all kinds of persecution. I can remember being chased by a lynch mob in South Carolina, wanting to hang us up with a rope and guns. And when they came looking for us the Lord made us disappear; they were 20 feet away and they could not see us. It was amazing, and I have lots of miracle stories on how the Lord takes care of us.

Question: Why do you like to wear a white robe?

Answer: It’s a sign of peace and being married to the Lord (Rev. 7:13). They are also very comfortable and modest. I like to dress modestly-- not bringing attention to the body and misleading people. Lots of people sell their body instead of the words they sing.

Question: In today's Christian music scene, it's very, very youth-oriented, and I think this is your first CD and you're over 40-- does your age hurt or help your music career, in your opinion?

Answer: I think the age thing really is over-rated, and it’s only the people that market music that have that stereotype, but when people see the experience of the songs in motion and what happens when the Spirit moves an audience they are surprised. I sang at a film and music festival in Los Angeles recently, and the stage was in a bar cantina-- not my favorite place, but I go all places so all will hear...Anyway, a man came up to me after and said, "I cannot believe it. You did it and pulled it off. You sang about Jesus in a bar and everyone really liked it-- they didn't throw you out!” He went on and on. That is an example of what happens wherever I go-- the Lord will move mountains and people you would never expect all of the sudden start proclaiming their own Christianity when they see someone else speaking the truth openly. I refuse to dye my hair or play the age game. I think I got that a lot from my dad and mom who are ageless. Dad is 88, mom's on chemo, and they're working out at a gym a few times a week, taking walks and living an active life. In fact, my dad still works. I really think the age thing is the wrong way to sell music-- that's how they sell the worldly music; we are not worldly and are not talking about worldly things. We need to be an example to the children that wearing lots of makeup and hardly any clothes will only end them up in trouble, and a wrong conception of who they really are.

Question: Final thoughts?

Answer: We have to keep our hearts open in order to receive His forgiveness and to know He really does love us. The Lord is always talking to us if we take the time to listen. If we do not give Him the time we will not hear Him. To live a life of miracles is to live the life of Christ, which is free of worry and fear, and we too will recognize Him when we see Him and He will know us and allow us to participate in the most exciting times this planet has ever seen. To be here now and watch the Lord fulfill His promises in His people is one of the most satisfying experiences one can share.
