Christian/Gospel Music News, Reviews & Interviews

Pearson, Derrick Print E-mail
Going through hundreds of CDs received here at ChristianMusicDaily.com, I happen upon Derrick "Doc" Pearson's "Lord You Are My Everything" CD, and it's so refreshing, honest, anointed, and listenable, that I decide he should be interviewed for this site.

Derrick PearsonQ) Doc, I get hundreds of CDs a year and very few get covered on my site, but yours captured my ears because it sounds truly heartfelt, honest, and refreshing. Your CD is called "Lord You Are My Everything." What inspired you to record this CD?

A) Over my life I have come to realize that other than Jesus Christ we really have nothing else that we can truly depend on. Everything else in this world is prone to failure at some point or another. However a trust in, faith in and dependence on Jesus will never fail us. I hope to encourage listeners with this CD to "let the Lord Jesus Christ be your everything." When we make him our everything we truly do have everything.

Q) You're not very famous, yet you've worked with/for some pretty famous people. Can you share some highlights of who you've worked with in the past and what your role was in their life?

A) I’m not much for fame as I have come to know that fame is fleeting. However, I have had the privilege of composing and producing music for a number of famous artists such as “The O'Jays.” “The Whispers,” “The Dells,” and other national and local artists. Some of my songs have been used in TV shows such as “Miami Vice,” “The Equalizer,” and “Inside NBA Stuff.” The years of experience composing, recording and producing music have helped to prepare me for where the Lord has me now and I thank God for the experience.

Q) You've been playing music since you were a little boy. What's something you've learned recently that you never knew before when it comes to playing and/or recording music?

A) I have come to learn that music is similar to food. We all have different tastes. Everyone likes something different when it comes to food; some like one thing, some like another. For example: some people like broccoli, some do not, some like ketchup on their eggs, others do not. Earlier in my career I thought that one style of music would appeal to everyone. This is not so. I have come to learn to seek to please the Lord--not people--with my music. I wrap the message that God has given into the music He has given me and put it out, despite what people think of it, and I am never persuaded by opinion. I am only persuaded by the opinion of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Q) If you had to describe your CD in two sentences to someone who has never heard of you or your music before, what would you say in those two sentences?

A) This CD is a variety of songs blessed of the Lord. This CD is packed with songs that will encourage and inspire you in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Q) You're not afraid to mention the name of Jesus in your music, yet so many Gospel artists these days are forgetting His name. How has Gospel music changed in recent times, for better or worse?

A) For the better, we seem to be opening ourselves to new production and recording quality, which makes for better sounding Gospel music. For the worse, we seem to be getting away form the Word of God and the acknowledging of Jesus in our music. We as composers and artists must never forget that when Jesus is lifted up He will draw all men unto Him. I have a motto I live by when it comes to composing songs: I spend more time making sure the song and lyrics are scriptural instead of spending more time making the song and lyrics clever.

Q) Now that "Lord You Are My Everything" has been out for some time, can you share how it has touched people's lives-- can you give a specific example of how a particular song touched someone who then told you about how important that song was to them?

A) My wife and I were invited to a couple’s 25th wedding anniversary celebration. The couple was introduced and entered the celebration to the song "Keeper." Later they expressed how relevant and touching that song was to them, as God had been their keeper for 25 years-- I thank God for that.

Q) What's it like where you live, spiritually-speaking? How does someone reach someone with The Good News these days when people are so distracted by other hings?

A) I am blessed that in my area of Washington, DC we have access to numerous Christian teachers and activities, however I thank God that in this day and time no matter where you are if you have the internet or a TV you can find something spiritual on sites like this one or BuffaloChristian.com, as well as The Word Network, The Gospel Music Channel or TBN (Trinity Broadcasting Network). To reach people these days, we have to be the Word of God in action. People must see that we are clearly different from the world. As the world continues its downward spiral we must show the world a peace on the inside that passes all understanding so the world will look to us to find out what is keeping us in these perilous time. Then we can say that this hope of glory in us is Jesus Christ and each one can reach one.

Q) What's the overall theme or message you try and communicate to people thru your music?

A) That Jesus is the way. He is the only way. When we live, move, and have our being in Jesus Christ then we have victory over circumstances. Jesus is the only reason for the music I make.

Q) If someone wanted to buy your CD but they'd never heard you sing before, who could you tell them you think you sound like?

A) Well I don’t actually do the singing. I merely composed, produced, arranged, and performed the songs on this project and I am doing the spoken word parts on the CD.  I have been blessed to know some anointed and talented vocalists, such as Adrian Gause, Tahesha Jones, Al Johnson, Lee Johnson, & Rita Hollins, that loved the Lord enough to lend their voice to this project. The CD contains a wide variety of sounds and styles. The listener might hear some Reggae, some Funk, some R&B, some Gospel and some smooth Jazz. In other words it is a variety of different sounds and styles, offering a little something for everybody.

Q) What's the best way for someone to get your CD, "Lord You Are My Everything?"

A)  You can download the CD from iTunes or other download sites such as Wal-mart or Amazon etc. or you may order the CD online at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Amazon, Family Christian Stores and others.

Q) Is there anything else you wanted to share with a global audience?

A) I hope your audience will purchase this CD project and I pray that the music of "Lord You are My Everything" will encourage them to seek the Lord Jesus Christ as their source for everything.
